Petalonia fasciata (Petal Weed)

Petalonia fasciata is a green/brown edible seaweed which is high in sugar and starch. I find it’s flavour very agreeable and it’s great mixed up in rice dishes or added to stews.

Petalonia fasciate used to be eaten by ‘the peasants’ to provide nourishment during the ‘hungry gap’ at the end of winter, just before the spring. Anyone whose grown vegetables throughout the year knows what I mean by that.

You can eat it raw, cooked or dried. To dry, follow the same instructions for drying dulse here.

Hi there,
like the site, very informative.

when you say you can eat it raw, cooked or dried, is it the green part or the brown part?

Many thanks
