Lime (Linden)

Common Lime (Tilia x europaea) is a sweet-scented blossoming tree that brings a generous crop of nectar for bees and lime-flavoured honey for beekeepers every summer.

All lime trees in the species Tilia are unrelated to the species of tree that produces lime fruit (Citrus aurantifolia).

Botanical Description

Common lime trees grow up to 40 m. The bark is smooth with a thick, fibrous texture and the leaves are large, dark green and heart-shaped with a paler underside. The tree blossoms in small clusters of creamish yellow flowers, which are heavily scented and attractive to bees. The fruit are oval-shaped and ribbed with pointed tips.

Perennial. Native.

City and town parks, deciduous woodland, hedgerows, scrub.

Flowers and leaves.

Harvest Time

Spring to Autumn.

Food Uses

The flowers and leaves make a pleasantly soothing herbal tea. Dried lime flowers were once stocked in many French households to make Tilleul.

The flowers also flavour liqueurs, lemonade and cordial. The leaves can be picked for salads and sandwiches.

Nutritional Profile

Mature lime leaves were dried into a food supplement and used as a nutritious gruel during the occupation of France in the second world war.

Herbal Medicine Uses

Lime leaves have been used as a herbal remedy since ancient times. The leaves were said to increase urination, regulate menstrual cycles, dissolve blood clots, cure boils, treat wounds in the mouth, and relieve swollen feet. Lime sap was once used as a cure for baldness.

Other Uses

Limewood has been used to make toys, instruments and household utensils.

Safety Note

There are few known side effects of using common lime in food and medicine, but moderation is always advised. Seek advice from a medical professional before using the tree as a herbal remedy. 

The safety of consuming or using lime tree products during pregnancy or when breastfeeding has not been sufficiently established and, therefore, it’s best avoided.

Lime flower and himalayan balsam vitamin water

On a beautiful hot English summer afternoon, I went picking Lime Flowers (Tilia Spp.) and Himalayan Balsam (Impatiens glandulifera) flowers. The scent from the Lime made my head reel as I drifted into reverie.

Being of a sober nature these days I get tired of hearing that the only drinks foragers make are ones that include alcohol, and in most cases get you mind bendingly whacked out of your head.

These days I choose to get drunk on Life, with nothing stronger than an espresso passing my lips. That wasn’t always the case I have to say, it’s just that I’ve now discovered better, healthier, more natural and stimulant-free ways to experience ecstasy!

Enter the world of vitamin waters, or sobriety drinks as I call them. This one will hopefully have you purring with delight.


Ingredients

  • 100g lime flowers
  • 30 Himalayan/Indian balsam flowers
  • 2tbsp clear honey or 15 dates.
  • 2 litres water

Instructions

  1. Put ingredients into a 2-litre clip-top Kilner jar and stir until the honey has dissolved.
  2. Allow standing in direct sunlight on a windowsill for 2 days stirring morning and night.
  3. Serve either warm or ice cold. If you let the concoction stand for 4 days you’ll end up with a naturally effervescent drink, but it will be slightly more tart.
